GENERAL ATC STATEMENT - MISUSE OF INTERNET ORDER
The Air Training Corps has a zero tolerance policy to misuse of the Internet. For the purposes of this Order, ‘misuse’ means making a defamatory* or derogatory* comment about anyone, whether a cadet, member of staff or any third party, through the medium of a website, blog, chatroom or social networking site, or in e-mail. It should be borne in mind that even statements which are essentially true can become defamatory when broadcast in these ways.
All staff and cadets should be aware of the damage that malicious comments or accusations can cause to a person’s career or standing in the ATC. They can cause great personal distress and affect families or marriages and, for these reasons alone, are never to be made.
Cadets discovered to have made libellous or defamatory remarks on Internet sites about anyone, face the possibility of dismissal from the Corps. Staff doing so face the possibility of being recommended to HQAC for termination of service. Any perpetrator* faces the likelihood of legal action being taken against them with the possibility of having to pay significant damages to the person who has been wronged.
The Air Training Corps takes its Duty of Care to all personnel very seriously and will defend them from any malicious attack on their character. Social networking sites are regularly scrutinised for inappropriate content. It is the responsibility of all personnel to ensure that unacceptable behaviour is not allowed to continue.
Anyone who has concerns relating to this subject should speak with their Unit Cdr in the first instance, who will advise the correct action to take. Genuine concerns are not to be aired on Internet sites, but brought to the attention of the chain of command including the permanent staff (Wg Ex O and ARC).
* Defamatory is defined as attacking the good reputation or speaking ill of a person, such that there is recourse under the law.
* Derogatory is defined as belittling or demeaning.
* Perpetrator is defined as the person doing wrong
